Dr. Sachin Patel is the Lizzie Gilman Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He earned a B.S. in Biological Psychology from UC Santa Barbara and completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin. After residency in Adult Psychiatry, he joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center as Blakemore Professor and Director of General Psychiatry. Dr. Patel specializes in treating substance use disorders and co-occurring mental illnesses, particularly in inpatient and residential settings. His research explores cannabinoid neurotransmitters and cannabis pharmacology relevant to psychiatric disorders, with original research publications in leading journals including Nature Neuroscience, Neuron, and Molecular Psychiatry. His work is widely recognized and has been supported by federal, nonprofit, and industry sources. He has served on the National Academies’ committee on cannabis health effects and holds leadership roles in major psychiatric and neuroscience societies.
